Making images

Looks at the two main types of image (GIF, JPG) used in Web Development, and where they are typically used.

Includes examples of the same image to illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of optimising images (bit depth - GIF and compression - JPG) to create smaller file sizes.

Basic Image Enhancement

Things to know...

  • Photoshop : web safe colours look different in Photoshop's RGB working space compared to the final GIF/JPG output. The colour shift is quite noticeable as soon as you "save for web" and enter the Image Ready optimise window. As much as I prefer to work with Photoshop's tools, I find that Fireworks allows me to see the colours as they will be displayed in a web browser while I'm actually creating. Here are my notes on trying to analyse and resolve the colour shift problem.

  • Although early versions of Photoshop can save large files it won't reopen files larger than 2GB. Photoshop CS supports PSB allowing a max. 300,000 pixel x 300,00 px dimension. Workarounds include SAVE using a lossless compression technique to reduce file size; or save layered files as composite images. A program called GIMP (GNU image manipulation available for Mac/PC) will open any size file (if your hard disk can handle it).
